Associate Field Program Supervisor - Leadership Programs - Graduate School of Education

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary, part-time, non-tenure track, Field Program Supervisors to support practicing administrators and teacher leaders in Title II identified public schools throughout the Bay Area. Coaching occurs online and explicitly centers equity and anti-racism as key levers to leading liberatory schools.

1. What is 21CSLA? What is the UC Berkeley Regional Academy?

In July of 2020, the California Department of Education authorized funding for the 21st Century California School Leadership Academy (21CSLA), a statewide initiative to provide leadership development and support to preK-12 public school leaders.

In most of the Bay Area, 21CSLA support services are provided by the UC Berkeley Regional Academy. The regional academy provides professional development and learning opportunities for educators, from teacher leaders all the way through, and including, system leaders, who are committed to equity and building a culture of deep reflection at their institutions.

UC Berkeley's Regional Academy focuses on, the areas of leadership development; coaching; disciplinary-specific learning; curriculum development; distance learning; and technical assistance. Programs will be offered at no cost to participants employed in Title II districts and schools, and will include leadership coaching as well as an emphasis on improving instruction and achievement outcomes for English Learners; students with disabilities; low-income students; and other historically marginalized students.

In conjunction with the 21CSLA State Center, UC Berkeley's 21CSLA Regional Academy serves educational institutions in six Bay Area counties - Alameda; Contra Costa; San Francisco; San Mateo; Santa Clara; and Solano.

2. What is the UC Berkeley Regional Academy's Definition of Coaching?

Coaching is an integral component of leadership development and leader resilience, which are two important goals of 21CSLA. As part of a multidisciplinary team serving Bay Area Title II districts and schools, coaches act as partners in delivering high-quality support to school leaders, with the goal of increasing outcomes for vulnerable student populations. In general, coaches support and guide coachees to translate theory to practice and respond to the goals and needs of students and the community. Coachees create their own goals informed by a 360-degree leadership evaluation and the coach's assessment of their developmental level and experience.

The UC Berkeley Regional Academy uses an equity-centered coaching model that has the goal of giving every coachee what they need to develop their full leadership potential. The model includes four major components: (1) core beliefs; (2) ways of being; (3) knowledge and capacity, and; (4) skills and practice. Each coach is trained in equity-centered coaching, and participates in ongoing professional development to enhance practice and create coherence throughout the program.

3. What do Leadership Coaches do?
  • Provide 25 hours of coaching and support per year to each assigned coachee in translating leadership theory to practice, utilizing the equity-centered coaching approach as well as other supportive frameworks when appropriate.
  • Create strategic coaching plans based on a holistic review of data and coachees' self-identified growth goals.
  • Document coaching interactions effectively within required timelines.
  • Serve as strategic planning and coaching partners to district contacts.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning alongside other coaches and 21CSLA staff, with a lens of continuous improvement.

4. What are the expectations for Leadership Coaches?

In addition to drawing from their professional backgrounds as former administrators and teachers, coaches are expected to do the following:

  • Embrace and model an equity-centered approach to school improvement
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of program expectations
  • Understand and assess the different components of a school as an organization that can impede or facilitate progress
  • Utilize technology for email, communication, and other documentation such as Google Drive
  • Attend all required meetings and program events

With Coachees:
  • Use the 360-degree leadership evaluation, related data/research, and other feedback to identify areas of development
  • Identify high leverage personal growth areas for individual coachees and help them to set goals in these areas
  • Identify the learning needed by coachees based on multiple inputs and develop a course of action including related reading that will advance the skill in this area

Assessment and Documentation:
  • Track progress towards goals using designated documentation format and technology platform
  • Participate in evaluation and assessment activities
  • Articulate indicators of progress aligned with identified goals and track progress towards achieving these goals
  • Support coachees to assess school and individual readiness/capacity for change
  • Determine the highest leverage entry point for improvement based on the school context, health, district priorities, and principal capacity
  • Work with coachees in a manner that allows transfer of the above skill set

5. What are the qualifications for this position?

Basic Qualifications (Must be met at the time of application): Master's degree or equivalent international degree.

Additional Qualifications (Must be met by start date of job): At least one year experience as a teacher.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced Degree in a related field or evidence of having held a teaching or pupil personnel services credential.
  • Professional experience in public school leadership, preferably as principal or equivalent.
  • Background in leadership, professional development, coaching, mentoring, and/or continuing education.
  • Technology proficiency with email, websites, word processing, Google Drive, video conferencing and social media.
  • At least 3 years as an Administrator.

6. What support is provided for individuals in this position?

Upon hiring, all new coaches are required to complete 20 hours of equity-centered coaching training. Coaches participate in ongoing professional development to enhance practice and create coherence.
