EDS 176/178 Combined PK-8 and 5-12 Curriculum Course in the spring semester

The spring course meets on Zoom on Tues 4-7pm in the spring.

All Art Education courses follow the MA Public School Schedule in the Spring.

The Art Education MAT Program prepares students to teach Visual Art in PK-12 schools and is designed and approved to meet the Massachusetts initial licensure requirements. Applicants must be aware of licensing protocols, MA Professional Standards for Teachers, and procedures for CAP (Candidate Assessment of Performance); must have experience working with Teacher Candidates (student teachers); and must have commitments to culturally sustaining, anti-racist curriculum development, teaching practice, and learning assessment.

This course focuses on curriculum development for elementary, middle school and high school art programs. Emphasis is placed on lesson and unit plan writing, curriculum design, and critical study of existing art curricula. Discussion topics include: curriculum development culturally and linguistically diverse populations, anti-racist practices, integration of art with other subjects, the application of national and state standards to curriculum, evaluation criteria and procedures, and studies of contemporary art and visual culture in art curricula. Instructional methods, assessment strategies, art media, and technologies will be explored through student projects and presentations. The course fosters the development of sequential units, guided by enduring understandings and essential questions. Lessons will reflect the knowledge and practice of differentiated instruction and reflect a sensitivity to the developmental growth and personal uniqueness of all learners.

 

Qualifications

 

Required Experience:

·        A master’s degree or higher is required

  • 3-5 years of experience teaching at an accredited institution
  • 5 years of experience teaching art in a K-12 setting

·        Extensive familiarity with the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure requirements, including CAP

·         Preferred Experience:

  • Supervision of student teachers
  • Demonstrated leadership in the field and record of excellence with a broad range of professional accomplishments and knowledge in visual arts education
  • Strong connections to the art education and k-12 communities as evidenced through conference presentations, exhibitions, publications, and professional networks
