The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (EDC) in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a tenure-eligible, Special Title series position as an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education with focus on Literacy education. This is a teaching-focused nine-month appointment, effective August 15, 2023. Responsibilities will be divided between teaching, service, and research, with faculty in this position typically expected to teach a 3-3 course load. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to integrate their teaching and service with research that aligns with the department’s mission on social justice, culturally responsive teaching, educational equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Responsibilities include the following: teach undergraduate literacy-related methods and classroom management courses in an embedded elementary school context (e.g., EDC 323; EDC 329; EDC 339); collaborate with school partners; supervise undergraduate practicum students and student teachers; actively serve on the Elementary Education program faculty; and conduct research that aligns with the department’s mission. These courses align with the department’s mission which includes diversity, trauma-informed care, social justice, educational equity, multilingual instruction, inclusivity, and other justice-oriented topics. Candidates for this position also have the opportunity to lead the Kentucky Reading Project, in which the faculty member would work with in-service teachers and teach a graduate-level summer institute. The expected distribution of effort for this position is 66% teaching, 10% research, and 24% service.
