Lecturer Pool - CalTeach
The CalTeach program at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary non-tenure track lecturers for its undergraduate education courses for the 2020-21 and 2021-2022 academic year, should an opening arise. Positions may range up to 33% time and may begin in the Spring 2021 semester.
Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley will begin the fall semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction may be synchronous, asynchronous, or a combination of both. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools.
CalTeach courses include introductory seminars focused on science or math teaching in elementary and middle schools, Knowing & Learning in Math and Science, Classroom Interactions: Focus on Equity in Urban Schools, Research Methods, Project Based Instruction, History of Science and Math, and Apprentice Teaching for student and intern teaching support.
General Duties: Teaching or co-teaching a CalTeach course includes holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, and preparing course materials. Responsibilities may also include assisting with student field placements in local schools, providing supervision and support to student and intern teachers in their classrooms, and supporting CalTeach students through the credentialing process. Basic Qualifications: Masters degree (or equivalent international degree) is required at time of application.
Preferred Qualifications: A doctorate (or equivalent international degree). At least 3 years of secondary math and/or science teaching experience is preferred, particularly within the Bay Area. Undergraduate teaching experience, excellent oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities are also desirable. The ideal candidate will also have practical experience with scientific laboratory or field research, or science or mathematics education research and program evaluation.
Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and is based on the Non-Senate Faculty Scale established by the University of California. The current scale, for academic year 2020/2021 starts at $56,381, for a full-time academic year salary. This position is in a represented bargaining unit
