About This Department

• Features disciplines in communication sciences and disorders (audiology, speech language pathology) and special education
  (K-6, 7-12, early childhood special education, deaf and hard of hearing, visual impairments, orientation & mobility)
• 43 faculty members: 17 tenured/tenure leading (14 early and mid-career); 13 professors of practice; 9 lecturers; 4 research professors
• Several faculty direct core laboratory facilities and provide leadership for the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior
• Fall 2018 undergraduate enrollment was 390 students; graduate enrollment was 220 students
• Home to the Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic, which serves 5,000+ client visits each year for speech, language, hearing and balance services
• Home department for the Academy for Child and Family Well Being, Kit & Dick Schmoker Reading Center, and numerous research labs
• Key partnerships with several schools, Nebraska Department of Education, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Boys Town National Research Hospital, Creighton University, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital
• Faculty actively pursue external funding, with submissions totaling more than $28 million and grant awards exceeding $4.2
  million in 2018-19
